Well, nothing is impossible, you’ve come to the right place. Here, we’re going to focus on 6 techniques to grow Instagram organically, without buying followers, using bots, or any other shady practices.
First of all, did you know that the words in your Instagram username are searchable?

It is very important to focus on your Instagram name because the name is searchable on Instagram too.
Try to use important keywords related to your business/brand in your Instagram name. Write something that your audience would use to find your account.
Keep your photos clean and good quality. It doesn’t mean you can’t be creative anymore. Just make sure it is easy to see what your main subject is.
People don’t typically follow accounts that post low-quality pictures. They want to be inspired by what they see.
Instagram is using a technology called “image recognition”. This means that this technology can “scan” your photo to figure out what’s on it.
Hashtags are keywords. People can search for a hashtag on Instagram to find you. And Instagram checks what hashtags you are using to show your posts to people who like the same things as you.
Make sure your followers know you’re listening and that you genuinely care about their comments by interacting with them or even liking their comments.
Spend a few minutes a day liking and commenting on other people’s posts. Interact with people outside of your feed is key.
Before you post your photo to Instagram, there are two important things to keep in mind: your audience’s time zone and what time they’re most often checking Instagram.

Automaters are our best friends. From Tailwind for Pinterest to Facebook’s own scheduling tools. Automaters and schedulers automatically post and take action on behalf. Set them up and let them run!
Instagram, if you aren’t already familiar with it is a brilliant way to reach potential customers, but we rely on a few strategies to really leverage Instagram. You need as large an audience as possible, you need great content and you need to be consistent with posting.
Doing all that yourself is hard!
But I have discovered an
Unsocialise comes with a scheduling tool. It’s easy to use. Just drag your pictures in, write your captions and select the time you want it posting and wooosh! Unsocialise automatically posts. Not only that but you can put in the first comment. Currently (Jan 2019) I recommend putting 4 hashtags in the caption and 26 in the first comment.
You can tag the location – great for people who want to promote to a specific location. I recommend at least putting your country in as Instagram tends to like it when you use its different features. (Get yourself a boost in the old algorithm!)
It has a calendar and photo editor built in. To be honest I don’t use the photo editor as I really like VSCO for editing. The calendar is useful to make sure you have a post every day or as required.
I love love love the insights tool on Unsocialise. From the insights section you can manage all the automaters you have at your disposal, you can see how they’re performing and you can see your engagement level (aim for over 5%!). It’s really useful for at a glance account performance and also managing the account through Unsocialise all in one place.
This is like a little magic wizard in the
I liken following my target audience to leafleting through people’s doors. You’re simply letting them know you exist. It’s up to them to follow you back or not. I then use the unfollow tool to unfollow anyone who chose not to follow back. Otherwise, I’d be following about 30K!! It’s clever enough to know who it’s followed through the program and to only unfollow them. You can also set it on different speeds if you are confident your account can take it.
This is probably my favourite tool on Unsocialise. You can set it who to like for a start. I have people who I support on Instagram and it’s really important to me to like their content,
You can also use it to encourage growth by setting it to like certain hashtags. For example, if someone uses the hashtag #shehustles,
The final thing I use Smart Like for is to like my feed. It keeps on top of it so I don’t have to. This works in my favour as Instagram feels I’m an engaged member of the community. Believe me with the hours a week I lose on Insta I truly am, but this just makes sure everyone gets a like and my engagement levels are high!
The Smart Message function sends a DM when someone follows you. Now sometimes I find these spammy, but it’s receiving them, its the content inside the message. I personally like to have a bit of fun with it, like “here’s your spammy DM, no but seriously get yourself a brew and have a read of this….” that kind of thing. Entertain them and share your latest freebie or blog post. My Facebook Group grew mainly from including it in DMs believe it or not!
Just don’t be a Spammy Pammy!!
I don’t use the Smart Comment function. I have never seen an auto comment that isn’t spammy, I’m terrified it’ll land on the wrong post. Once I posted on my personal feed about my darling cat passing and I got the most inappropriate comment. I’d hate to do that to someone I just find them really spammy and they’re not for me, but if you know a way to use them in a non spammy way then do let me know. Maybe owning it and having a hint of humour/sarcasm is how to do it!
The other one I don’t use is the repost function. My feed is curated or colour co-ordinated to the max! So I wouldn’t share other’s content on my main feed – only in my stories so I can’t tell you much about this function either.
What I really like about
It’s now bringing in a DM manager so you can manage all your Direct Messages in the program which I love as it means I can do it on the laptop and I’m a far faster typer on there!
I have hit a few snags and technical errors along the way, and if I’m honest if it weren’t for how amazing it is I probably would have defected, but each time customer services dealt with it super fast and they’re honestly so nice. I think a few other companies could learn from them to tell you the truth!
I’ve been using it for 4 months and I haven’t found another program as safe, that has all the functions I need in one place and that is so bloody useful!! Happy Instagram growth!!

But don’t panic, all is well in the world of Insta, and this is only going to enhance your reach (not hurt it like the dreaded algorithm… yack – let’s not talk about that!)
The new update
New with the latest update is Alt Text. If you have a website you may have seen this with pictures you add. It’s a text description that displays if the picture doesn’t load. That may not sound much. Who wants to read words where a picture should be you ask – wait stop! It has a bigger purpose! Alt text is readable by Google meaning you can take advantage of it to make your website optimised to be found in search results.
So how does this help you grow on Insta?
The alt text will help your images be found on Instagram AND on Google! Which means you’re going to reach more people. You can add alt text under advanced settings when you post, or you can add to old pictures by editing. Instagram will try to assign a description automatically, but you may want to create your own for more accuracy and better results.
How to use for best results
When adding alt text you have 100 characters to describe the picture. Think about two things. Describe the picture accurately. For example, if it’s your dog lay in his bed write “a Springer Spaniel dog lay in on a blue bed”. Also think about keywords. If I was posting a picture for my account it may be me working on a laptop, for example, so I would write “a female entrepreneneur working on a laptop”. My reason being I want to come up in results for “female entrepreneur”
Get Insta working for your business
You may know my story. But for those of you who don’t this is the short version. Quit job Feb 2018 (hated it – made me depressed). Started She Hustles Inc May 2018. By July/August was a full time income. September took on team. Jan 19 launch new services and courses.
These are the facts, but what about me the girl behind the hustle?! Well I have time for life, I do all the school runs, I don’t miss the assemblies and plays where kids give their best Oscar worthy performances. I spend time with grandparents whilst I can. I walk my dog with no time restraints. I feel no stress from work or a boss I hate. I get to be creative and free rein to grow my business as I choose. Which mostly involves having Netflix on in the background whilst I chill with my laptop and a brew. Am I lucky maybe… did I work hard and find a way to achieve this – yes definintely!
So how did I achieve a full time business
I focused initally on growing an audience. If you don’t have an audience you have no one to market and sell your services to! I chose to do this through social media. I had my marketing background, but more was needed. I experimented and read and worked on the account until I found the most simplest quickest way to grow it. I found a way that takes very little time to grow very quickly (over 14,000 targeted engaged followers in 8 months).
I then implemented this over and over for my clients with the same results. One business quadrupled their income in 2 months alone! It’s free to do, no buying followers, no spammy tactics. In fact tactics that will convert your followers to customers. Which is often the missing piece.
After all what the point in having all those followers if they don’t want to buy from you!

Max growth – minimum time!
It’s undisputed that social media is one of the best ways to grow your business in this day and age. Despite talk of algorithms, pay to play and reduced organic reach, social media remains the top way to promote your business online. So how do we maximise it’s potential? We get organised and we have a plan.
At the core of everything in your business, you must clarify your brand. Your brand tells people why you exist, what you want to achieve, why it matters, and if you are a good fit for them. It’s really important to do in-depth work on this and really get to the core of the heart of your business.
Spend time exploring why you do your business, why you do what you do, and how you want to make a difference to someone’s life. Once you know the message and purpose of your business it’s time to get communicating it.
To get our brand and content out there, we use social media, typically Instagram and Facebook. So we need to get to grips with our content. Our brand and content have a very very important job. They become the salesperson in our business.
We are not there in person to build rapport with the customer, to explain the benefits and features of our products and services. We aren’t there to handle any of the reasons they may not want to buy. So we have to rely on our brand and content to perform this role.
For this reason we have to use our content carefully and in a considered way. We also have to be consistent and maintain a presence on social media.
Okay so you get how important it is to be consistent and have a social media presence, but how do you now fit that into your day around the 3,492 things you have to do in the business?
After spending a lot of time using social media to promote businesses, I came up with a plan and things I do regularly. I settled into this simple routine, it didn’t take up much time and it got results. My social media grew (check out my Instagram, I’m on 14K as of Jan 2019 and I started the account in May 2018). I felt organised and had time to do other things in my business.
It’s important to use your content wisely to make sales for you and planning is key for that.
Social media is about being social. It’s fantastic for getting customers directly, but there’s another way to use it. Take collaborations for example. Find another person within your niche, who’s not a direct competitor, and has a large audienc. In collaborating with them you are now being exposed to a brand new audience.
This is an audience you have put no time in to build and nurture, you just get to enjoy someone else’s hard work to benefit your business!
That said it works both ways, and the larger and more engaged your audience is, the better collabs you will get.
A good way to start can be with brand reps. Ask for people who are enthusiastic about your brand to talk about it and share content in return for a discount or freebies. The larger the audience and reach of the brand rep the better.
You may want to consider doing a contract if you do use brand reps. For example 1 social media post per week in exchange for 1 free product a month. This will cover you if they just take the product and disappear!
It can be a good idea to promote your account. You can do this in various ways. You could pay for ads, run a competition or use an influencer account.
I won’t go into paying for ads as this is a huge topic on it’s own! Social Media Examiner have some great resources on running Facebook ads.
Competitions where you ask people to like, comment and share are great for growth and engagement. It will create excitement and brand awareness at the same time.
You can also ask influencers to share your social media accounts. This does typically cost. However, if you pick an influencer account within your niche it can seriously help growth. For example if you sold bikinis, you’d look for an account which showcases bikinis from many different designers or stores and ask them to feature you. Their large audience is primed and ready to follow the particular niche and so it’s perfect for targeted growth.

You may have noticed that Instagram just launched a bunch of new features, one of which is the “close friends” feature. I’ll be honest I thought that this would just be useful on my personal account at first, however then I realised how I could use it in my business.
You can now post on stories and just share it with a select audience by selecting to only share it with the “close friends” list. This means only the people in that list see the story.
You could use this feature to communicate with your best customers/clients, your biggest supporters and most loyal fans.
Obviously you could just show them content that’s meant for them and not for the rest of the world, but what else?
and my personal favourite you can start to treat this feature almost like a Facebook Group.
We know that Facebook Groups are great for engaging with our audience, for most they’re superior to the business page now, so how can we replicate this on Instagram?
I like the idea of creating a group of people on Instagram who see specific content just for them. You could let them know you’ve added them to this VIP list.
If you go to your profile and hit the three lines on the right hand top corner of the screen, you’ll see close friends in the menu. Click into it and add people to the list from here. Easy peasy!
When you go to post the story, do it all as normal, when you go to post you get the option to share with close friends only. Again nice and easy!

The ever elusive search for more customers. We all have a bottom line in business. A financial line. Even if you don’t depend on earning money from your business, if you’re in business you need to serve people in your niche for the business to be successful. But what if, despite your best efforts, the customers and clients aren’t forthcoming?
You post on social media, you may blog, you are in ALL the Facebook Groups (are you in mine – The Hustle Hub!?) but you’re still not getting customers! You even planned and scheduled content. You were consistent. But still no sales. Why?
So you are putting the content out there. But who are you aiming it at? If you cannot answer that question specifically then if we were to have a consultation session together I would tell you that you are marketing to the world! Yes, the whole. Entire. World.
There will be key points of your business – the selling points. There will be aspects about you that will connect you with people. After all, it is you they are also buying into. These points are what people subconsciously pick out in your content and connect to. That’s where the relationship starts.
If you are marketing to the world, let’s take even just a small cross-section – say 100 general people in the world, you may appeal to just 1 of that 100.
Then will that 1 person buy, maybe, maybe not.
You just put 100 posts out and you didn’t get one sale – sound familiar.
So we narrow down who we talk to and we aim our content at them. Now take a cross section of 100 people, all 100 should now technically be interested! Out of 100 interested people, how many might now go on to make a purchase – yes, you guessed it, more than 1 person that’s for sure.
Use your specific content to build relationships with your audience. People need to trust your business before they buy from you. Don’t force a sale, work on building the relationship with people in your niche.
Once people trust you they are far more likely to buy. All this starts with meaningful content and forging connections with your audience. Without knowing who you are talking to how can you ever build this relationship.
Don’t be afraid of narrowing down your niche. Done correctly it shouldn’t hinder you, only help you.

The customer shouldn’t know they are being sold to and you shouldn’t feel like you are selling. You should feel like you are serving. Instagram has become more than just a picture sharing platform. With stories and IGTv, and more people than ever using the platform, your Insta is more than just a feed. It’s as important as your website home page. And there is one Instagram trend that is sure to position you as an expert in your niche. This particular Instagram trend works for businesses of any size, Instagram influencers and even personal brand accounts. You might even start seeing your friends doing it.

Yes, that’s right, you won’t automatically appear in all your follower’s feeds. In fact, the more followers you get, the less likely you will be to be seen!

And the cost is boosting that post! The surefire way to get you back in feeds and search results.
I need a boost at many points in the day, from coffee in the morning, to being dragged to the gym by my gym buddy. This is a little social media boost to get your post and account seen by a target audience. It’s going to become integral to your growth on Instagram, and an Instagram trend that will be seen as the norm for businesses in 2018. It’s the one way to beat the dreaded algorithm.

Instagram stories, love them or hate them they will help your social media account grow and encourage engagement. If like me you don’t particularly like being in front of the camera you may have been shying away from doing them. You can post a “story” to your profile, this can be videos or pictures, and people can see it for 24 hours, or you can have it featured permanently on your feed.
It’s very much like Snapchat, but on Instagram. The videos don’t appear on your feed (unless featured), and you can also share it to your Facebook stories directly from Instagram.
Instagram stories should help with engagement and growth when used correctly. Apparently using Instagram stories can help you beat the new algorithm. It is thought that the interaction with your story let Instagram know you are achieving engagement, and even if it doesn’t get your post into your followers feeds, at least your story will be at the top of their page!
I really like stories for adding more personality to your brand. You could show behind the scenes content. Often our feeds are polished to perfection, but on your Instagram stories you can show the authenticity of your brand and take your followers on a journey.
It’s a really nice way to collaborate with other brands as well. According to Social Media Examiner, taking over someone’s stories for the day is a great way to use stories. Or you could do a collaboration with someone. Keep in mind you want to be offering value to your followers and enticing potential followers.
Why not tag people in the story to engage with followers?
Okay so how do we make a story that’s not going to fall flat on its face? If you have nothing interesting to post, my advice is to think engagement. Go with a poll, ask a question, give a call to action. By inviting your followers to do something, you’re going to get that engagement you want on your social media accounts, but you’re going to give them something interesting to think about. Just posting a picture of your pizza is not exactly going to create a buzz is it.
Again with stories we can tag people and locations, so take full advantage of this. It doesn’t cost anything and could mean new people engaging with you over a familiar location for example or following you because of it.
You can use hashtags in the post, obviously not all thirty! But one or two hashtags won’t hurt!
Have a play with the different video features and text overlays to snaz up your post.
Remember Coco Chanel always said – take off the last accessory you put on!

You’ve prepped your Instagram account to perfection, you are ready to embrace your Instagram followers, you are ready to watch those notifications explode, you’re ready to engage. The traffic to your website is going to make it crash. You hit that “share” button, and you sit back and wait. 24 hours later, 3 likes, no new follows and no traffic to your site. You wonder what’s gone wrong? Where are the hoards you were so ready to engage with?
The cold reality is you may not have been #instaworthy, or you’ve not used the right hashtags or even hashtags at all.
This guide will help you to produce quality content to attract the right people to your business or blog on Instagram.
It’s really important your overall Instagram is cohesive. It must link to your brand and business. Think about it, if you are a hairdresser, and you want to attract people to your business you should be posting pictures of beautiful hair. It doesn’t have to be hair you’ve done, you can post inspiration, you can share other’s content, but you want to show what quality of hairstyles you believe in. If you posted about your pet dog, why on earth would anyone follow you to find out more or seek out information on hair? It amazes me how many people treat their business account as a personal one and post irrelevant images to their brand!
The feed should be colour coordinated, even if that is using all bright colours or just shades of blue for example.
When you post always ensure you are “on brand”.
Here are some examples of great cohesive Instagram feeds.
It’s not just about pulling the feed together overall. The individual picture matters. It needs to say open me, it needs to appeal to your audience. Scroll through your feed or through search results and you will see what I mean. What posts are you drawn to? Notice how some posts you stop and look at and want to read more, others you scroll on past. Search for images within your niche and see what appeals to you. Don’t directly copy these, but work it in a similar way.
Images need to be clear. No one will click on a poor quality image. I really recommend free stock websites such as Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Pixistock has beautiful images and you get several free ones each month. You could also use Canva to create beautiful images that are #instaworthy.
You have a beautifully curated feed, you’re ready to post a stunning eye-catching image, now it’s time to draw your audience in with your caption. Captions that are more “real” tend to get more engagement. People can identify with it, or you’re answering a question they have or clarifying something. You are offering VALUE! These can be short or long, mix it up. Don’t think your words have to directly correspond to your picture, for example, a nice picture of scenery posted with a caption that contains a motivational quote and details about why you are posting it can work very well.
I scroll through search results to engage with my followers (read more about engaging with your prospective followers here) and I like to comment on posts. Sometimes I literally can’t comment. The caption is so boring and offers so little I can’t think of anything to reply that won’t sound like one of the spambot replies!
Ask a question, try to get your followers involved. Just make sure they feel a pull to comment because engagement is Instagram currency.
Tags are a highly unused method to supercharge your posts. Tag a location every time. Whether it’s where you are, or your country or where the picture is taken, just always put a location in. Obviously, if you are a local business it should be the area you are based in to really boost local traffic. If you are an online business it’s still worth using the location tag as you can come up in searches so why miss the opportunity!
You should also try to tag people. You could tag accounts that might feature you, you could tag products you are using, you could tag people you are with or people who might be interested in your post. This pulls you into their feed, it’s a networking or promotional opportunity, and they may reciprocate.
Some people don’t like to share the Instagram post with their other social media channels as they feel like people should have different content on each of the channels. To an extent I agree with this, however, depending on your time constraints it’s difficult. I don’t necessarily have time to post on all my social media channels for The Female Entrepreneur Hub several times a day! So I do share on Facebook and Twitter. However, I tend to top up the other accounts with their own content in addition.
You can use up to 30 hashtags on Instagram. This is across your caption and your comments (made by you). If you try to post more it won’t publish the comment. If you notice your image has gone on but the not the comment it’s likely this is why. You can put your comments in your post or in the comments. A lot of people use full stops to push them further down the comment so they are not as much of an eyesore. Another way to get around this is to post the picture then comment on it with your hashtags. It will pull you into the results just the same.
My advice is to use all thirty, particularly whilst you’re trying to maximise growth. You don’t want to go too high level with your hashtags. Instagram hashtags such as #motivation will mean your post falls in with literally millions of other posts and this isn’t going to help you. Much better to use more specific hashtags. So for The Female Entrepreneur Hub, I use hashtags such as #femaleentrepreneur or #workfromhome. It just narrows down your audience to people you really want to target. You want to aim to get in the top 9 pictures for that hashtag search.
I like to use hashtag generator such as Leetags (available on Android and iPhone)
Now you have posted your content you should start to see some likes and comments coming in. Hopefully, in time you will start to see some engaged comments. At first, you may just get spambot comments. You should still reply to these! I thank them for their comment. Use 4 words or more. Why? Because Instagram sees this as engagement and pushes your post further up the ranking for that hashtag.

Instagram is a shop window for your store. No matter what you sell or do! It’s where prospective customers/visitors see at a glance what you’re about and whether they want to look at what you offer any further.
It has to look interesting and appealing at a glance.
Your branding has to be upfront and apparent.
On top of that, did you know that you can set certain things up so you can be found in searches? It’s Instagram SEO! No no no – don’t run away! I know SEO stuff sucks and boggles the brain at the best of times, but I’m going to give you the bare basic facts. You can set these up once and really that’s you done! I promise to keep it no frills and easy.
This is what I want you to do to get your Instagram marketing ready
If you don’t already have an Instagram account, it’s not too late! If you want to try an Instagram account for your business, give it a go. I personally find Instagram the easiest platform to market on, It’s way simpler than Facebook, and I find I can get engagement much easier. Set yourself up an account and then turn it into a business account in settings by linking it to your Facebook page.
This is going to give you lots more stats and options. If you advertise products in your posts you can tag them. (To do this you add products to your Facebook page shop and they automatically pull through to Instagram.) You’re going to get important stats like when you get the most engagement with your posts.
So now you have your business account. There are no silly rules like on Facebook about changing your name. I want you to consider two things; your name (e.g. The Female Entrepreneur Hub) and your username (e.g. @the_female_entrepreneur_hub) on the profile.
If you can get something in here that is searchable for your business this will help you be found. So, for example, my name is easy to do this with, I want to appeal to Female Entrepreneurs… “The Female Entrepreneur Hub” covers this pretty well!
What if your business is called “wags and tails” because you look after dogs?! It’s not very searchable, so consider something like “Wags and Tails Dog Walkers” and “@wags_and_tails_dog_walkers. When people search “dog walkers” this should get you on the list.
Like Google, you start lower down and work your way up using engagement and growth strategies, but at least you’re on the list!
Okay onto the bio. You can now use hashtags in the bio which will also pull you into search results. The bio needs to be what you offer the person. You might think it’s about you. It’s not! Sorry! The bio needs to tell the person why you are good for them, what you can offer them, why should they follow you? Try to answer this in your bio. Finish with one or two hashtags that are predominantly your niche.
Ensure you’ve added a link to your website. You can change this link as often as you need. You may want to direct them to specific pages or posts at specific times and with certain promotions. Test the link to make sure it works.
Looking at the images now on your account. Look at your Instagram feed first. Does it reflect your brand? Is it cohesive? If people are expecting pictures of travel, if you start posting pictures of your dog, it’s not why they followed you and chances are a few will unfollow. Are the colours cohesive and tied into your brand? You can see in the grid below how colours and images can be different but still on brand. Go back over your account and delete any posts that ruin the flow of your feed.
Now, look at your profile picture. Your options are your logo or an image that personifies your brand. This absolutely must be cohesive with your brand.
